Reading and Phonics in Year One

Reading is not just a skill for life but a key to opening our imaginations and stretching our minds. Reading gives us wings!

In Year 1 we follow the Read Write Inc Phonics Scheme. This allows your child to access phonics lessons directed to them. They will look at sounds matched to where they are at in their reading at the current time. We will use the Read Write Inc Phonics Assessment to direct these lessons at the children.

Reading in School

When using RWI to read the children will:

  • Learn 44 sounds and the corresponding letter/letter groups using simple prompts
  • Learn to read words using sound blending (Fred talk)
  • Move towards Fred in their Head by the end of the year.
  • Show that they comprehend the stories by answering simple inference questions bases on what they have read.

We will also have a story at the end of each day which will progress onto a class text. This will be a book that children can enjoy as a class each day. We will look at our favourite books and authors and allow reading to be at the centre of our learning.

Reading at Home

Each child will also take home reading books that match the sound that they read as well as books for pleasure to reinforce the enjoyment of reading. Every week their will be a homework set to also consolidate when your child has been learning in school. We recommend reading each day, and we launch our initiative in this in KS1 in January.
